The Kennedy Center stages a play on Pakistan titled “Kite on the Wind”

The Kennedy Center staged a play on Pakistan “Kite on the Wind” from 4-12 April, 2008. The Pakistan Embassy coordinated closely with the Kennedy Center in the production. The cast comprised a variety of seasoned American actors and young students, including children of some Embassy officers. The lead role of Shahab, a Pakistani boy in Lahore, was played by young Bazil Tariq, son of Col. Tariq, the Embassy's Army Liaison and Technical Officer, who excelled in the role. Bazil attends the Longfellow Middle School in Mclean and is a keen student of Theater Arts. The 60 minutes play to which the Pakistan National Council of the Arts also contributed, focused mainly on the “Basant” festival and highlighted the rich cultural heritage of Lahore .

The story revolves young Shahab. He is the son of a great kite flyer and hesitant to follow in those footsteps. The play runs at two levels - when Shahab is awake and when he is day dreaming. He meets a range of folk characters when he is in the latter mode. These inspire him to take up the challenge and emerge as a champion kite flyer in the tradition of his father.

Kim Hines wrote the play and Deirdre Kelly Lavrakas directed it. Tehreema Mitha was the choreographer and Yasmeen R. Khan took care of dramaturgy.
